What Does the Pelvic Floor Do for Men?

You may have heard you have a pelvic floor but what does it do?

The pelvic floor in men is a group of muscles located at the base of the pelvis, and it plays a crucial role in several key areas of health. Though often overlooked, these muscles support bladder and bowel control, sexual function, and core stability.

The pelvic floor acts like a hammock, holding up important organs like the bladder and bowels. It helps control the release of urine and bowel movements, and when the pelvic floor is strong and well-coordinated, it enables smooth and voluntary control. On the other hand, when these muscles are too weak or too tight, issues like incontinence or constipation can occur.

The pelvic floor is also essential for sexual function. These muscles are involved in achieving and maintaining erections and in ejaculation, which means pelvic floor dysfunction can sometimes lead to difficulties in these areas.

Finally, the pelvic floor works with other core muscles to support the spine and stabilize the body during movement. Weakness or imbalance in the pelvic floor can lead to back pain and reduce stability in everyday activities.

In short, the male pelvic floor isn’t just "extra" muscle—it’s central to a man’s physical health and quality of life. Strengthening and maintaining pelvic floor health can bring benefits in everything from bladder control to overall core strength.
